SUMMER SCHOOL AT TISCHNER EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY

"Central Europe in the European Union: Politics, Institutions, Identities"

 Krakow, 16 June 2007 - 1 July 2007

In the summer 2007 Tischner European University had a pleasure to host 19 students of political science and sociology from Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Mexico. During a two-week long summer school at TEU students took part in various lectures and intensive classes on Central Europe and its place in the European Union.

Lectures and classes offered during the Summer School at TEU:

• Regional security in Central and Eastern Europe and the role of the NATO;
• Central Europe in the trans-Atlantic cooperation;

• The Role of Russia in Central Europe;

• European cultural diversity;

• Nations, nationalisms and new states building in Central Europe;

• Religion in the public sphere in (Central) Europe;

• Institutional architecture and political practice of the European Union before the Eastern enlargement (2004);

• Regions of Central Europe: "Visegrad countries", Baltic states, the Balkans;
• Regions of Central Europe: the "near abroad" (Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova);
• Natural resources as a security factor in (Central) Europe;

• EU today: widening or deepening Constitutions and Constitutionalism in Central European states.

The Summer School Program for ITESM  included also a meeting with the honorary consul of Mexico in Kraków, Member of Polish Parliament in Warsaw as well as numerous cultural activities, such as:

• Krakow guided tour;

• trip to Wieliczka Salt Mine;

• Warsaw guided tour (visit to the Polish Parliament, the Royal Castle);

• trip to the Tatra Mountains;

• Visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau National Museum;

• Visit to Institute of National Remembrance (IPN).

The Summer School ended with final  exam - in-class essay.

The Summer School for ITESM turned out to be an enriching and rewarding experience for both Mexican students and TEU organizers. Below you will find some of the comments made by the end of the program.
